The Orchard Park Central School District has been invited to take part in an exciting community initiative in partnership with the University at Buffalo, UB Orthopaedics, and the Buffalo Bills. This pilot AED Mapping Project aims to identify and record the locations of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) throughout our community, and potentially help build a program that could expand nationwide.

Students are encouraged to keep an eye out for AEDs when they are out in the community and record their locations. These locations will be added to the NEAR Registry, a database used by 911 dispatchers during cardiac emergencies to help callers quickly locate the nearest AED while waiting for EMTs to arrive. By participating, students can play a real role in helping save lives.

Every student in the district will receive a flier and a recording sheet.  (Extras are available in each school’s Virtual Backpack) Students can use these to log AED locations they find at schools, stores, community buildings, and other public places.

To make things even more exciting, the Buffalo Bills are offering prizes in several categories, including:

  • Top AED finder in each grade level
  • Top class at each school
  • The AED found farthest from a student’s home

The challenge runs from March 18 through April 14. Students should return their completed logs to their teacher so they can be submitted to the project coordinators.

We encourage families to support students as they explore their community and help raise awareness about the importance of AED accessibility. Together, we can make a difference and help create safer communities for everyone!
